Comedian, Writer, Director
Welcome to Jessica Wilcox Comedy
Jessica Wilcox is a comedian who’s written and performed in numerous sketch shows in the Chicagoland and Detroit Metro areas.
She’s best known for writing, directing and producing her own musical comedy, Girl Jesus, Resurrected & Back to School!. Other notable projects include being a contributing cast-member of Burlesque is More, the long-running flagship burlesque style comedy show at The Annoyance Theatre & Bar and directing Monday Night Live, the student written sketch show at iO Chicago.
I started doing comedy in high school in the late 90's, producing comedy sketches in video class which were broadcast on our public cable access TV channel. It was very Wayne's World of me!
After graduating from college I forced myself to do standup at open mics around southeastern Michigan. I was 22 years old and holding my own as newb surrounded by bros. After one summer of open mics I learned that there was a Second City near by offering classes Novi, MI. It was through their writing and improv programs, as well as their student shows that I got my start with sketch and writing.
In 2008 I moved to Chicago to get more serious about comedy and make my dreams come true!
From 2008 to about 2015 I made a serious of creative U turns including getting heavily invested in the wrong training center for me, and getting perpetually sucked into soul crushing office work that left me dead inside.
My story resumes in 2015 when I said 'fuck it' and quit my job to undertake my life's most rewarding project, the musical I wrote and produced called Girl Jesus, Resurrected & Back to School
When Girl Jesus closed in 2016 I got very excited about my prospects as a comedian and decided I should be doing everything all the time, including writing television pilots, producing comedy sketches on youtube, doing tons of live solo sketch, directing student sketch shows, and performing in Burlesque is More at The Annoyance in Chicago.
I got tired, needed a break, and realized I had some administrative things to address such as getting a website, (hello?), so I stopped performing and now I'm in the process of getting back and making this all work one way or another!
Performance Formats & The Chicago Comedy Scene
When I tell people that I'm a comedian they usually imagine that I do stand up or improv, and while those formats have played a role in my life as a comedian, nowadays I do solo sketch mostly.
Solo sketch is an anything goes format that lends itself well to variety shows, guest spots and some open mics.
My best work has been original characters in costume delivering solo comedic monologues. I have a number of characters for solo sketch which include Babs, Squib the Alien, Turtle Dove, Jenny/Forrest Gump, Diane Psychic Medium, Salad WW Mascot, and much more!
I dabble in music, and I also LOVE directing sketch shows with a special interest in mounting material written by ultra new writers & improvisers.
Because of my time performing comedy burlesque in Burlesque is More at The Annoyance in Chicago, I also have a special interest in sexiness & dancing incorporated into my solo sketch.

All Things Girl Jesus...
In 2015 I decided that I absolutely had to do something big to reenter the comedy scene or my dreams would slip away for good. The result was sitting down to write a one act play that evolved into a full length shoe-string musical. I pitched the show to my theater of choice and was rejected, so I pulled my pants up to my tits and pitched the show to five more comedy theaters in Chicago and was accepted to three of them.
I ultimately chose The Public House Theatre because the producers offered help and allowed me extra time to put everything together over the course of four or five months.
The result was and is what I consider my free 'MFA from the University of Autodidact-ism' in producing a show from writing the script to pitching the show to casting, directing, fundraising and promoting.
I am incredibly proud of my work on Girl Jesus, Resurrected & Back to School and thus I find it befitting that in 2019 I should write a scaled back, unplugged sequel that follows the original characters to their senior year in high school, written four years after the original was written when the characters were mere freshman.
About Girl Jesus 2, Senior year...
It's four years later and time for Girl Jesus & friends to pick careers!
...But will Girl Jesus buck parental pressure to die on a cross of martyrdom because she'd rather attend community college?
Her career dilemma is complicated further when Girl Jesus's mom finally loses her virginity, introducing an unwanted new male figure into Girl Jesus's manger life.
Also Homeroom Teacher subjects the seniors to a barrage never ending of sex education classes that leave them way too knowledgable about fucking while processing their grief for the loss of Debate Girl.
A look back on the original show!
Original Press release copy:
In a parallel universe Jesus is a girl... and she's in high school.
Will Girl Jesus incur the wrath of her absentee father, God, when she attempts to win popularity by summoning the Holy Spirit to get her class drunk on miracle booze at a party? Will she discover that being cool has nothing to do with obeying the rules and everything to do with getting a makeover and winning a boyfriend? Or does the answer lie in disobeying her sexually repressed mother, befriending her nemesis, Mean Girl, and discovering that all the drama is just an illusion created by her apathetic Homeroom Teacher?
The answer is yes! Girl Jesus is the classic protagonist struggling with low self-esteem, hygiene issues, and the belief that she must ditch her role as a Miss-iah in order to achieve mediocrity. In the end she succeeds by leading her class in a mutiny of their year-long detention so she can “save” her school’s talent show, in lieu of saving humanity.
Girl Jesus proves that a young lady can really shine once she stops Bible thumping and starts preaching to the beat of her own drummer.
...Additional Girl Jesus Content!
As the GJ documentarian I couldn't exclude these two gems! The first video was filmed in my old apartment in Andersonville (Chicago neighborhood) where we held Girl Jesus rehearsals, and the other is the promotional video I slapped together with Gabrielle Wilson to promote the second run of the show. Thanks for watching!

Original Television Pilots
In 2017 I wrote two television pilots! Check out the synopses below.
The web based comedy, Earth Up and Coming stars an internet famous extraterrestrial who gentrifies planet Earth by moving in with a broke family, forcing them -and humanity- to endure the obscure trends and ridiculous dietary needs of his race.
College Monster Farce is a network sitcom about a college campus where crimes committed by monsters are brushed off by school authorities. The secret society that investigates these threats is a group of detectives who operate under the guise of campus security. They call themselves the College Monster Farce."
